EPIDEMIC: TB in the Global Community is an educational project designed by David Rochkind, an award-winning photographer who has spent years working on projects about tuberculosis. This interactive website, which is based on Mr. Rochkind’s photography and multimedia reports, focuses on three of the countries that are the hardest hit by TB: South Africa, India and Moldova. Each of these countries is representative of their respective regions, where the TB problem continues to evolve.
Mr. Rochkind produced this project with the financial support of the Lilly MDR-TB Partnership and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting. Additional support for the reporting in South Africa and India was provided by the International Reporting Project at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies and the Stop TB Partnership’s Images to Stop TB Award.
Mr. Rochkind’s photographs have been published in The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, Glamour, Rolling Stone and other media outlets. His work was been recognized by numerous organizations, including Photo District News, the National Press Photographer’s Association and the Magenta Foundation, and has been widely exhibited in the United States and abroad.
As a companion to the website, two curriculum units were developed by Education Development Center, Inc (EDC). EDC, founded in 1958, is a global nonprofit organization that designs, delivers and evaluates innovative programs to address some of the world’s most urgent challenges in education, health, and economic opportunity.
